- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Like so many creatives, Ben Haines has two jobs. His day job at the famed Mount Langhi as head winemaker, and his passion project under his own label, Ben Haines Wine.
The B Minor range is the perfect entry point into the Ben Haines world; two Rhone-inspired blends, this is the Marsanne Roussanne.
Although ‘entry level’ hardly does this wine justice - with a massive 97 points it rates as one of true superstars from James Halliday’s 2017 Australian Wine Companion. In fact, it may just be the highest-rated wine under $30 in the entire book.
Ben describes this as, “Both a winter white, and a sessionable summer delight.” There’s a little more Marsanne in the blend (60%) this year, and with each portion of the blend being separately fermented in big, old, oak, there is some complexity and interested to be found.
For lovers of interesting/textural whites, this is going to be a great go-to. Ridiculous value.
What It Tastes Like
“Marsanne is gorgeously aromatic and seductive with its threads of spice and layers of texture and flavour. Roussanne complements with pithy stone fruit, summer flowers and a pure and lively acidity that ties the blend together” - Ben Haines
97 points. “A 60/40% blend from the estate Dabyminga Vineyard planted mid-?90s, whole bunch-pressed, wild-fermented in French oak (15% new), matured for 10 months on lees. Brilliant straw-green; this is a seriously good wine, full of energy, with great line and length to its apple/citrus flavours, the balance also impeccable. It will develop superbly.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
Marsanne and Roussanne share a long history together. Rarely do you find a partnership with such balance. Hand picked from granite soils in the Upper Goulburn sub-region of Central Victoria, each parcel was individually barrel-fermented in large, old oak with natural yeast, aged on lees for 8 months then racked and bottled. The result is fresh, vital and fun..with a whole bunch of character.
Marsanne is gorgeously aromatic and seductive with its threads of spice and layers of texture and flavour. Roussanne complements with pithy stone fruit, summer flowers and a pure and lively acidity that ties the blend together: 60% Marsanne:40% Roussanne. Both a winter white, and a sessionable summer delight.
