When establishing the Bellvale vineyard in 1998, John Ellis took his inspiration from the legendary vineyards of Burgundy.
The vines that populate his vineyard (mostly Pinot Noir) are planted very close together and grown without irrigation to force the vines to fight for every ounce of nutrient. John believes this makes a more characterful wine - more stress adding more nuance and individual character to the finished product.
The 2015 release of his estate Pinot Noir is a lovely release. It shows plenty of young berried fruit with enough undergrowth and savoury character to give it an edge. The 91 points from Gary Walsh confirming this as a top vintage for this wine and a bargain Pinot Noir from the Gippsland region.

About the Producer
John Ellis planted his vineyard in 1998 with a view to bring the philosophy of Burgundian winemaking to Gippsland. He makes wine with a traditional mindset, with close planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay the core of his vineyard. “I’m a firm believer that the vineyard creates the wine. There are no fancy tricks in the winery,” says John. These are classically styled wines that over deliver for the price.
