- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir is one of Australia’s most iconic wines.
Grown on the hallowed soils farmed by Phillip Jones in the Southern part of Gippsland, for many, this represents the zenith of Australian Pinot Noir.
This is a wine of impeccable stature, one which has drawn resounding praise from all who taste it. In his review of the 2015 vintage, Gary Walsh wrote, “So sure-footed and confident, it almost has a swagger.”
If you want to see the full potential of Australian Pinot Noir, this is a wine you must try.
What It Tastes Like
“Quite often I prefer the Premium to the Reserve, which is no bad thing. So sure-footed and confident, it almost has a swagger. Cherry, sweet cinnamon and cedar oak, dried flowers, a little earthy bass. Medium bodied, silky and precise, with delectable savoury and fruit sweet switching, layered and complex already, laced up tight with ultra-fine pixel tannin, and long smashed strawberry and spice finish. A delight. Really needs a few years, or at worst, a good spell in a decanter.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

CURRENT VINTAGE: 2015
The 2015 vintage has delivered red wines with varietal purity, fresh natural acidity, tangy minerality and overall balance: one of our best vintages. These are great wines from Bass Phillip, and they are all capable of medium, long-term cellaring……. However, they are beautiful to drink now!! All the reds need one to two hours breathing after pulling the cork.
WINEMAKER’S NOTES: Fresh fruit, vibrant: pure pinot noir in character: multi-layered and moreish, with hidden spices, and a clean, mineral finish. Delicious! Will grow over the coming ten years.
Bottle Size: 750ml
Drink Until: 2040
About the Producer
The great Bass Phillip Estate is one of Australia’s most iconic producers. For decades Phillip Jones has farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding one of Australia’s truly world class wines. The Bass Phillip Pinot Noir is a benchmark wine, rightfully one of the most collected in the country. Jones’ wines are incredible. They are wines of power, personality and persistence.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
