The Bannockburn Sauvignon Blanc was one of Michael Glover’s most experimental wines and became something of his signature during his time at the wheel of this great vineyard.
Matt Holmes’ interpretation is not as wild as the Glover version but still carries the textural intrigue this wine has become known for.
The fruit was fermented in three equal batches: the first on skins for seven days, the second on lees in mostly old oak, and the third pressed straight to stainless steel vats.
It’s a little more conventional but no less powerful than previous vintages and got the nod of approval from James Halliday with 95 points.
What It Tastes Like
“The skin fermented portion had a strong cinnamon note during ferment, and while ferment aromas don’t always persist into the finished wine it has in this case. Some spice, and varietal marker green peas complete the nose. Full and yet dry, breadth from the skins, texture from the lees contact and yet refreshing acid on the palate.” Matt Holmes
95 points. “The Bannockburn credo is to find every bit of flavour and texture in the grapes - a Mike Tyson approach. It works very well, the power of the punch of the fruit well able to withstand the extreme vinification methods. Sauvignon blanc seldom looks like this.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
Primarily cropped from the 1980 plantings on the eastern edge of the Winery Block, the 2015 also includes the first crop from young vines planted on the Olive Tree Hill.
For his inaugural vintage, Holmes split the fruit three ways: one third was destemmed and lightly crushed before fermentation on skins for one week, finishing in older puncheons, another third was whole bunch pressed to puncheons and the remainder whole bunch pressed to tank.

About the Producer
For decades, the Bannockburn vineyard has been producing Burgundian-inspired wines which truly reflect the winery’s unique terroir. With the arrival of new head winemaker, Matt Holmes, the next chapter of Bannockburn’s long history has commenced. New ideas, a fresh take, the start of something new and exciting for this famous patch of earth.
This Victorian region rocks some very serious wines. Pinot Noir from this area, depending on who you talk too, is arguably the best in the country. Phenomenal output for the size of it. The wines from this area are idiosyncratic and have an earthy, sensual quality. Burgundian varieties, Syrah, hell, even Pinot Gris does exceptionally well here. To be honest, it’s very hard to go wrong when buying from Geelong.
