Àl’étatpur is a French term which translates to ‘the pure state’ - something that Ben and Sarah Chipman are striving to create in their small batch releases under this label. This is Barossa Shiraz, fermented with 50% whole bunches and gently pressed over a 24-hour cycle and was sent to old oak with no additions until bottling. Oak sits firmly in the background here. This is about the pure, glorious fruit that the Barossa is famous for. It's a premium Shiraz made with a natural philosophy and a unique example of Shiraz from this part of the world. Only 60 dozen made.
What it Tastes Like
Green herbs, purple and black fruit, some peppery spice and coal. Toothy graphite tannins which are so more-ish and married perfectly to the fruit. Depth of flavour here with a juicy and succulent vibe. Unadorned Barossa beauty for all to see.
Old vine Syrah from the John block fermented with 50% whole bunches, followed by 20 hours in the basket press and 18 months maturation in old French hogsheads. 13.9% alcohol. 600 litres produced. This is serious juice!

Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.

While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
