The Adelina Shiraz Mataro showcases the exquisite old vine Clare Valley fruit that Jen Gardner and Col McBryde have at their disposal. Over half of the fruit in the 2015 release is sourced from vineyards 100+ years old. It's treated with the typical Adelina care: wild ferments, gentle handling, and this year a portion fermented in concrete. As a complete package, this is remarkable value and one of the best pound-for-pound reds in the Clare Valley.
What it Tastes Like
_93 points "Toasted hazelnuts, coffee beans, spice, blackberry, a little mint and clean earthiness. Medium to full bodied, nutty and tannic, lovely feel to it, not fruity, definitely moving into the umami spectrum, clean acidity, good finish, with a roll of tannin that’s finely packed and inky. May carry a little alcohol warmth, but tasted over two days, it was more settled as it took the air. A wine of grand scale and distinctive character." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Adelina's Shiraz/Mataro (56:44) is 100% sourced from the Springfarm area; the Shiraz is Adelina Estate fruit blended with some grapes from the Aberfeldy vineyard (now run by Jim McDowell and Anne Brown), while the Mataro is drawn from the mature Ashton vineyard "just up the road". Predominantly from vines planted between 1890 and 1930, typically red sandy sites on clay base, slate and limestone predominate as well. Elevation varies between 400-460 meters. All up, an imposing 65 per cent of this wine comes off vines with an age of around 100 years. Production wise it's Adelina's usual routine; all fruit is handpicked and destemmed mostly into open fermenters, with a small portion fermented in Col's new Italian, unlined concrete vats. Both fermentations are with wild yeasts and the wine is matured in French oak barriques (a modest 10-15% per cent new) for 14 months.

About the Producer
Col McBryde and Jennie Gardner are Adelina. A pair of smart cookies, each rocking a PhD in microbiology and between them some pretty serious winemaking chops. Together, they have formed one of the Clare Valley’s most exciting wineries. From what was a small operation that began in 2002, slowly but surely the Adelina brand has been picking up steam.
There is a delicacy and purity inherent in every wine they produce. From opulent old vine Shiraz and Mataro, to one of the country’s most excellent Nebbiolo and a set of scintillating Rieslings, there is a sense of class and refinement to the whole project. These meticulously crafted, beautifully presented wines are just a joy to drink.
The Clare Valley knows what it does, and does it very, very well. Riesling and Shiraz are the rockstars of the region and with some of the most famous wines in the county coming from this small pocket of SA, the Clare’s reputation for quality only grows year on year.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
