Yangarra Estate are absolutely one of our very favourite producers and a winery that is making serious waves in the Australian wine industry.
Being a hero for the McLaren Vale region, Shiraz, along with Grenache, are their specialties. Peter Fraser loves working with the old Shiraz vines on the estate and has perfected his style here over the last few years.
This is one of the best value Shiraz in the Vale. It has become a beacon of value for those looking for a wine of serious quality that won’t bust the bank account.
The 2014 received 95 points from James Halliday who said in this vintage, “Everything falls into place”.

Shiraz from our estate vineyard adopts more of a cooler climate expression than the typical McLaren Vale style thanks to the vineyard’s elevation and cooling night breezes from the nearby Southern Lofty Ranges, but retains concentration and complexity.

VINEYARD AND WINEMAKING VINEYARD INFORMATION Shiraz adopts a very different form at Yangarra than the typical McLaren Vale style, and is more akin to the cooler climate styles. Our single vineyard estate has twelve individual blocks of Shiraz. Each block is defined by different aspects and subtle variations of the sand and Ironstone soils that overlie the ancient North Maslin Sands geological formation.

WINEMAKING INFORMATION Shiraz was harvested at night and received by way of a belt elevator (rather than a screw-hopper which macerates the skins) and only de-stemmed. Whole berries were double sorted before going into open-top fermenters. We cold-soaked the fermentation tanks for 5-6 days until the onset of wild-fermentation, utilising the yeasts that naturally come in with the grapes from the vineyard. The open fermenters underwent a careful regime of plunging and rack and returns. The wine was then sent to French barriques after about 12-14 days and kept on the yeast lees prior to blending. The wine received no fining, just filtration.”

About the Producer
Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!
They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. For reds, Grenache is their flag bearer, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. His takes on Viognier are as good as any in the land. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block. A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
