If you're on the hunt for top value wines from the Beechworth area, the Willem Kurt wines by Dan Balzer would be very hard to go past. This Beechworth Shiraz is a prime example of Dan's ability to deliver high-quality wines at a very reasonable price. It captures two sides of Beechworth Shiraz, both the vibrant blue-fruited style and the more savoury, 'Rhone-esque' side of the region. This is great buying and drinking. In Campbell Mattinson's words, "It’s quite beguiling."

What it Tastes Like

"There’s an ancient grains feel to this Beechworth shiraz. That might take some explaining. It’s modern, in that it’s boysenberried, black cherried, licoricey and floral with a fresh, energetic feel to both the fruit and to the acidity. But there’s also that underscore of clove, campfire, cracked pepper and woodsmoke; it has a bit of crunch, like the crackle of stones underfoot. It’s pretty, in a strong way, but not in any way thick or soupy. It’s quite beguiling." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
