- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Remi Guise sourced a few small parcels of fruit from across southern Margaret River for this wine.
The majority was Grenache fruit, with some smaller portions of Syrah, Viognier and Malbec thrown in the mix. All fermented as whole berries, all spending some days or weeks on skins. This is a fascinating wine from this region.
It says much more about Remi’s style than it does anything particularly regional. Firmly structured, glassy fruit, a touch of herb and fantastic length - there’s a lot to like here.
This is a highly expressive lo-fi wine for the intellectual Grenache fan.
Only 65 dozen made.
What It Tastes Like
“One of the most tannic, firm and structured grenache-based wines I have seen, and not without pleasure despite the lack of frills and fun that the variety can bring. Ropes of slender tannin weave through kisses of dark fruit, sweet earth, briar, and the perfume is set to understated with similar characters. It sits long and fine in the palate, a touch of oak spice through the long, sleek finish. It’s a very fine expression here.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
93+ points. “Bit of a revelation these wines from Remi Guise. Guise works alongside Bruce Dukes (Domaine Naturaliste and consulting gigs) for the most part, but this is his standalone project. This is a pretty serious expression of grenache, with syrah, viognier and malbec in the mix, but mostly grenache, it seems. Expected that serious feel too; seems the metier of Guise.

2014 Karridale Grenache Noir | Syrah | Viognier | Malbec Southern Margaret River
Hand-picked parcels of fruit, from a variety of vineyards, was destemmed and fermented as whole berries, each batch being kept separate. The Grenache parcel had 10% of the stalks added back to the ferment. All batches spent approximately 12 days on skin, after which they were basket pressed straight to barrel where they completed fermentation. The parcels were then barrel aged 14 months, during which time the barrels underwent battonage every four weeks. The wine was then blended from barrel, clarified and bottled.

About the Producer
Remi Guise is starting something very compelling in Western Australia. His idea for the winery tripe.Iscariot centres around the thesis that from ‘berry to stalk’ the whole of the plant should be used in the winemaking process. No waste, no ‘cleaning up’ of the wines. Driving to make the most character filled and unique wines that any site can produce. The wines are fascinating and complex. Dig in, his is a project to keep a close eye on.
Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Grenache is the great sleeping giant of Australian red wine. We are the custodians of the oldest producing Grenache vines in the world, some ancient vineyards planted as far back as the 1850’s. Modern Australian Grenache is a different beast to the wines of yesteryear, they are more youthful and vibrant, showing bright red fruit characters, silky tannins and a delicious array of spices. With the viticultural resources we have at our disposal in this country, Australia can be one of the world’s leading producers of this variety, making wines that easily rival the best of Europe.
