- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
This wine is an homage to the wines made by the past legends of the Hunter Valley. A student of the history of the region, Andrew Thomas has crafted this wine in the classic "Hunter River Burgundy" style. Where traditionally these wines were predominantly Shiraz with a small portion of Pinot Noir thrown in for added complexity and aromatic highlights, Thommo has made this with a touch of Semillon verjuice. The effect is just brilliant. A modern spin on a classic style. This was Gary Walsh's favourite of the 2014 vintage reds from 'Thommo'. Enjoy.
What it Tastes Like
"Of all the 2014 Thomas reds, this is easily my favourite. Has a grassy, but pleasant, perfume over bright red fruits and roses. Light to medium bodied, crisp and well defined, with a cranberried freshness, light fine tannin, pretty raspberry flavour, and a long clean finish. It’s a lovely wine, made in a lighter, more classic Hunter style. It should mature gracefully, and well." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

It's a lively style, as you'd expect, with plummy fruit and bouncy acidity. You'd swear there's a touch of lemongrass to this wine. It's light in colour, but has more than enough flavour. Whether or not it's a style worth persisting with is another matter." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
Sourced from the Trevena vineyard (planted 1966) on the alluvial flats of Hermitage Road, which produces the ‘lightness’ we are looking for in this style. The acidity profile was balanced by co-fermenting a small portion (12%) of green Semillon ‘verjuice’ which was introduced at the commencement of fermentation. This was followed by maturation exclusively in older (5-6 years old) barriques for 10 months prior to bottling.

About the Producer
Andrew Thomas is one of the modern day legends of the Hunter Valley. He has made some of the regions greatest wines for over three decades and his personal label is one of the most highly regarded wineries in the region. If you want to try the essence of the Hunter Valley, Thommo’s wines are a must try.
The Hunter Valley is the home of Semillon in Australia. Arguably the best in the world, Hunter Semillon is one of Australia’s most truly unique wine styles. Add to that the fact that have been producing some of Australia’s best quality Shiraz for over a century and you can see why this is one of our most loved wine regions. But with a new generation of winemakers comes innovation. Now we are seeing risks being taken, new varieties being planted and some inspired winemaking which is writing a new chapter in the Hunter Valley’s rich history. We can’t wait to see what happens next.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
