- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
It’s a familiar story: winemaker works for a big company then strikes out on their own.
Invariably, the new project is smaller, all about passion and attention to detail. That’s precisely the case here with Sigurd.
Winemaker, Daniel Graham works for one of the country’s largest scale wineries. Sigurd, his pet project is all about minimalistic winemaking, ease of drinking and joyful experimentation.
The 2014 Red is a blend of Grenache from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale with 5% each of Shiraz and Mourvedre from the Barossa. It’s a lovely wine. One that perfectly hits the ‘drink me now’ MO.
With 93 points from Mike Bennie, this is the perfect wine to get acquainted with this up and coming star of the Barossa.
What It Tastes Like
“Spicy, savoury, game-meaty aromas. Red cherries, prunes, cola. Good way to begin the friendship. Medium bodied, juicy, vibrant red wine to sip on. Fruit is sweetish but not overwhelming and finishes savoury, spicy, herbal. Great texture, almost glossy, long in flavour, refreshing lighter red style. Yes please.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
93 points. “From a young winemaker who works in a big company so is Clark Kent by day, Superman by night, more or less. A blend of mostly grenache with some shiraz and mourvedre. The big company is pretty, well, big, and the winemaking for these wines is pretty much at the opposite end of the spectrum. Natural ferment, no additions, unfiltered/unfined etc etc. Get in on the ground floor.

Grenache (90%), Shiraz (5%), Mourvedre (5%), about a 25 day ferment. The Grenache has about 40% whole bunch. All fermented separately, in 300L oak barrels (just punched out the heads, easy), pressed to 300L oak barrels for about 14 months then bottled. A small amount of Sulfur just before bottling and hand bottled. Grenache sourced from McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley (Don’t tell them though…. Abit of rivalry haha), Shiraz and Mourvedre from the Barossa (Mourvedre and Shiraz from the sub region of Koonunga)
Bottle Size: 750ml
About the Producer
From one of the country’s most recognisable wine operations comes this winemaker with a desire to create something new. Dan Graham has quietly started Sigurd with the intention of exploring a more gentle and hands off approach to the winemaking process. The wines are textural and mercurial but always interesting. It’s just the beginning for this label and the future looks extremely promising.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
