Beechworth Shiraz can be spellbinding when done right.
This is Beechworth Shiraz in peak form. Made from the Saxon vineyard at 325m above sea level, here, Chris Catlow shows off his red wine making prowess.
A long, slow cold soak, a deft and judicious application of new oak. This ticks all the right boxes if you are looking for elegant Shiraz with in-built power.
In his 94 point review, Campbell Mattinson called the 2014, “fluid and flavoursome.” before announcing that in this wine, he thinks “A star is born in Sentio…“
Part of the new breed of Beechworth winemakers forging a new path for the region, this is a must have for all cool-climate Shiraz aficionados.
What It Tastes Like
“This is fluid and flavoursome. It feels relatively loose and easy-going at first but given air it firms. Needless to say then, tannin is fully integrated into the blanket of fruit. It tastes of boysenberry and black cherry, saltbush and fennel. Clovey/gumleafy lifts are apparent too. It’s still finding its feet, in many ways, though if you tuck into it now you’ll still find plenty to enjoy. A star is born in Sentio, I’d reckon.” - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
94 points. “One of the main aims of Sentio is to highlight “regional expression through unique single vineyards and consistent vinification techniques”. I don’t know exactly where the Saxon vineyard sits but it’s at 325m above sea level, which would suggest it’s on the warmer side of Beechworth (a positive for shiraz); closer to Golden Ball than to Sorrenberg, for instance.

94 points “Warm style in terms of its fruit profile, if not in alcohol, though there are plenty of dried- and pepper-spice characters here, keeping it lively. It’s otherwise nutty, black cherried, licked with fennel and gently smeared in smoky oak. It would be better though to simply describe it as complex but seamless. Both tannin and oak are mostly melts through the wine. Further evidence that we have a new top-flight producer in our midst.”

About the Producer
Chris Catlow is one of Beechworth’s most dynamic young winemakers. In his handmade winery he is crafting Burgundian inspired wines of impressive quality. The wines focus on power and drive, structure and articulation of site. He is exploring the regionality of Victoria with an incisive eye.
Beechworth is a small wine producing region with a big reputation. The distinctive terroir in this part of the country produces some of our most iconic wines. If you want serious Chardonnay or Rhone-inspired Shiraz/Syrah, you want to get to know Beechworth. Some of the most powerful cool climate wines in the country hail from here, and some of our future stars are making it their home. The future looks very bright for this champion Victorian region.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
