About The Wine
As James Halliday observed in his overview of Australia’s Top 10 Best New Wineries for 2017, “Ruckus is one to watch.”
Their focus on obtaining the best clones of the varieties they want to work with has produced some excellent wines in only a short space of time.
For their Merlot, they went to Bordeaux, for the Malbec in this blend, they went to Argentina, the modern home of the variety.
The result is a stunning single vineyard blend made from their home in Wrattonbully. Shiraz and Malbec working together in harmony. A great first release of this wine and one that will surely secure their place as one of Wrattonbully’s future stars.
What It Tastes Like
Black cherry compote, herbs and earth. Surprisingly lifted, guess that’s the Malbec talking. Long threads of savoury tannins and slick mouthful of fruit. Sour cherry finish, and a lot lighter on its feet than I was expecting. Not your classic SA bruiser, this has a bit of elegance to it. Great job all round.
“Single vineyard, made with vines planted in 2006 from malbec clones from Argentina (new to Australia). Heady spices, mocha oak, pepperberry, cherries. Creamy-sweet-savoury palate along with plush red berries, bittersweet coffee and licorice. It takes a unique left hand, spice turn.”

Introducing our Shiraz Malbec: The first in a series of Malbec blends
An experimental block of 4 Argentine clones of Malbec was planted on the estate back in 2006 as they became newly available in Australia. The Malbec was planted on shallow limestone soils similar to what was observed on a study trip of the fine estates of Mendoza, Argentina. They are on low vigour rootstocks and pruned to carry a low yield. Some of this earthy powerhouse Malbec was blended with our cool climate shiraz to create in interesting medium bodied wine. Expect subtle floral notes and flavours like cherries and pepper from the cool climate shiraz, and a punch of earthiness and spice from the Malbec. An interesting medium bodied blend that suits a Pinot lover’s palate. Think flame grilled meals, pizza night or hearty wintery fare. $28 per bottle. Winsor Dobbin calls this wine a “very nifty red blend” and picks it as one of his July “red wine bargains”.
