- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Grenache & the Barossa have a long history. This is winemaker Pete Hiscock's take on the pairing from 2014. The fruit originates from a small 37-year-old block in Light Pass. This is a beautifully judged first Grenache release from this new producer. It's serious in style yet still light on its feet - a difficult balance to maintain sometimes with this variety. In his 93 point review, Campbell Mattinson commented that, "This is a statement of quality from the outset." If the suite of 2014 reds from this producer are anything to go by, Rock of Wisdom is a Barossan name to keep an eye on. And with only 71 dozen made, the wines will not be around for long.
What it Tastes Like
"Personality plus. This is a statement of quality from the outset. Assorted berries meet mineral, woodsmoke, spice and gunpowder. Firm-ish tannin; just enough. Lots of lift. Lots of life. This really is a ‘live one’." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
93 points. "Grenache from the Light Pass sub-region of the Barossa Valley. 38 year old vines. No new oak. Fermented naturally. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. 71 dozen made only. Personality plus. This is a statement of quality from the outset. Assorted berries meet mineral, woodsmoke, spice and gunpowder. Firm-ish tannin; just enough. Lots of lift. Lots of life. This really is a ‘live one’." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
Grenache is the great sleeping giant of Australian red wine. We are the custodians of the oldest producing Grenache vines in the world, some ancient vineyards planted as far back as the 1850’s. Modern Australian Grenache is a different beast to the wines of yesteryear, they are more youthful and vibrant, showing bright red fruit characters, silky tannins and a delicious array of spices. With the viticultural resources we have at our disposal in this country, Australia can be one of the world’s leading producers of this variety, making wines that easily rival the best of Europe.
