- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
When you think of the Mornington Peninsula, chances are you are thinking Burgundian varieties, Shiraz if at all would be an afterthought.
While it rarely is afforded the praise that it perhaps deserves, in this wine we find “… another resounding vote in favour of this regional-variety combination.” according to Campbell Mattinson.
This is the finer side of the Shiraz/Syrah personality. It relies on elegance and spice rather than out-and-out fruit power and bombast.
A wine that Mattinson called “most handsome” in his 93 point review, the potential for the variety in the region is quietly yet confidently stated in this release.
What It Tastes Like
“Here is another resounding vote in favour of this regional-variety combination. It’s firm, well-weighted, comes splashed with both black and white pepper, and while there are twig-like notes it’s the rugged beauty of (black) cherry and ripe plum that sets it confidently on its way. It develops well as it rests in the glass; it’s a most handsome wine, in a cool climate style.” - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
93 points. “Mornington Peninsula shiraz. A perpetual dark horse of Australian wine.

About the Producer
Montalto are one of the quiet achievers of the Mornington Peninsula. Under the guidence of gun winemaker Simon Black they have amassed an enviable portfolio of vineyards and and wines from across the region. With the obvious focus being on Burgundian varieties, there are plenty of surprises to be had in the Montalto range including a cracking cool-climate Shiraz and some interesting aromatic whites and Rose.
The Mornington Peninsula has become a go-to destination for lovers of modern Australian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Mornington’s perfect climatic conditions for producing these varieties has seen it become, in only a relatively short time, one of the premier regions for these varieties in the country. The wines are beautiful. The best examples are wines which show a restrained power. Both intensity and elegance. It’s a region which will continue to blossom and mature for many years to come.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
