- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Mon Tout is the passion project of Richard Burch, the next generation of Burch family winemakers (of Howard Park). Richard has sought out biodynamically grown vineyards amongst the blue chip sub-regions of Margret River for his small batch solo project. In only what has been a few short vintages, the wines have come up to a very impressive level. The 2014 Mon Tout Shiraz is a quality example of the capabilities of Shiraz in a region dominated by Bordeaux varieties. It is medium bodied, bright and bristling with character. It was a hit with James Halliday who awarded it 96 points and with over a year in bottle, it is really starting to show well. This is pure, rustic Shiraz at its seductive best. A great first release from this producer who should definitely be on your WA watch list.
What it Tastes Like
"From a biodynamic vineyard in Wilyabrup; wild yeast-fermented and matured for 9 months in French oak. Vivid, deep crimson; a high quality wine with a genesis of first quality fruit well handled in the winery; it is full-bodied, yet polished and balanced, the tannins ripe, the oak already integrated. Has a great future." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

A ‘natural wine’ as such, that sees a bit of large format puncheon. It’s a sneak preview and I tasted it after 40 something wines, but its freshness and spice nearly woke me up. Crushed blue fruit, perfume, pepper steak, a little oak spice, but ¡hola! fresh. Medium bodied, violety, crushed blue and black fruit with exotic spices, fleshy tannin, almost peppery, chalky and fresh on the finish. Yum. Such vibrant juicy fun. Oh baby we like it raw." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Vintage Notes The vintage and growing season conditions experienced by Margaret River in 2013 and 2014 have been very similar and characterised by typical events; sufficient rainfall and catchment fill by the end of winter, a spring of cool, mild and blustery conditions that effect flowering and subsequent fruit set and ultimate yield in early varieties such as Chardonnay and Shiraz, and a Summer and Autumn of long and consistently warm to hot conditions. You could argue that it was near to perfect. Technical notes Handpicked, destemmed and fermented naturally in stainless steel open pots with one plunge per day. After the fermentation, the wine is drained off skins into a mix of oak and new French oak where it matures for 9months before decanting off lees into bottle. Tasting Notes A lively deep crimson colour and a surprisingly bright appearance for an unfiltered wine. The nose is full of crunchy fresh blue berries, sarsaparilla and sage. These same primary fresh notes fill the palate as the more subtle and inclusive character of the French oak tempers and shapes the finish. I love this wine. It is confident, comfortable, expressive - truly uninhibited and great. Exactly what we want it to be. From the short journey of these 2 Shiraz wines from the same block, we have concluded that the wine style is where we want it to be, the flavours and expression are very attractive, and our choice of oak will steer towards French and the combination of new and old as its seems more complimentary to the fruit.

About the Producer
Richard Burch branches out from under the wing of his family with the Mon Tout label. These biodynamic wines are extremely expressive of their origins. These are some great examples of modern Margaret River winemaking. Delicious and phenomenal value.
Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
