- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
This is Shiraz from the Eden Valley of the highest calibre.
Michael Hall has crafted a stunning wine here from 2014, preserving every detail and nuance offered up by this small, low cropping vineyard in the Flaxman Valley.
It is a deeply fruited and seamlessly constructed wine of power and grace. Premium in every sense of the word. 96 points from James Halliday. A top class example of Shiraz from this part of the world.
What It Tastes Like
“Rich and opulent, with a brocade of red and black berry fruits garnished with spice and a little pepper; oak and finely ground tannins join in on the finish.” - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
96 points. “Very small fruit set and crop, destemmed, 25% fermented in puncheons, 75% open-fermented, matured for 20 months in French oak (25% new). Rich and opulent, with a brocade of red and black berry fruits garnished with spice and a little pepper; oak and finely ground tannins join in on the finish.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
94 points “Eden Valley shiraz. It is such a wonder to behold. Where would the Barossa be without the Eden Valley? Blueberry, blackberry, mint, florals, roasted coffee and assorted dried/baked spices. Emphasis on the fruit, all jubey and succulent. Tannin melted therein. A waft of fresh cedar from oak, like a subtle infusion. On song, without a shadow of a doubt.”
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
The Naimanya vineyard sits high in the Eden Valley at 520 metres altitude, on the south-west fringe of the tiny sub-region known as Flaxman Valley. The soils are sandy loam, gravel and quartz over clay. Its altitude and soil structure allow a long, slow ripening season typically generating marked spice and floral characters. Fair winter rains and a warm first week of September promoted early budburst. A hot summer was broken by rain mid-february and cool temperatures thereafter.
The very small crop was picked on 4th April, all destemmed, fermented in closed puncheon and open fermenter. Matured in French Oak (25% new) for 20 months. Unfiltered.
Closure: Screw Cap
Bottle Size: 750ml
Drink Until: 2035
About the Producer
It is Michael Hall’s precise and methodical approach to winemaking which has made him stand out in the crowd of Barossa Valley winemakers. His wines ooze class and attention to detail. They focus on small, unique vineyards that produce high-quality fruit. No shortcuts in the winery and an unwavering commitment to quality. Classically designed wines designed to speak articulately of his region. Top shelf and highly sort after.
Eden Valley is the cooler more elegant brother of the brawny Barossa. Renowned for slick Shiraz, floral and lifted Riesling and even some stonkingly good Cabernet, the wines of this area provide a great counterpoint to the usual out and out power that South Australian wine has become known for.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
