If this isn’t one of the best value Shiraz in the country, then I’ll be damned.
Lock and Key is the entry label of Moppity Vineyards - one of the hottest wineries in the country. No joke, these guys are on fire!
What started as a venture supplying fruit to bigger wineries quickly changed when a certain 2006 Shiraz won Gold at the London International Wine and Spirits Competition. The accolades have been flooding in ever since, with hundreds of trophies and medals won in the last five years alone.
Shiraz is what Moppity do best, and at sub $20 this little beauty is the perfect way to get to know their unique style.
The 2013 picked up 95 points from James Halliday and a 97 points at the Melbourne Wine Show (where it was beaten in the Shiraz class only by the eventual Jimmy Watson Trophy winner), and Moppity owner Jason Brown reckons 2014 may just be the winery’s best vintage yet.
It’s firm and ripe yet elegant and balanced, and if there’s a more complete cool climate Australian Shiraz at the same price then I’d love to see it. A no-brainer.
What It Tastes Like
This screams modern Aussie cool climate Shiraz. Mulberries, blueberries and spice with a hint of lavender and a light dusting of herbs. Just so slippery, so refined, so much wine for this price. Outstanding again. Just goes down the hatch too easily.
94 points & special value star. “Good hue and depth to the colour; a prime example of cool grown shiraz, its quality conferred by the 40yo estate vineyard and skilled winemaking. Blackberry and plum fruit drives the bouquet and medium to full-bodied palate, with a touch of choc-mint adding to the flavour parcel, ripe tannins to the structure.”_
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
2013 vintage: Gold Medal & 97 points.
- Royal Melbourne Wine Show
A rich mouth-filling shiraz with a deep, dark colour that’s typical of the Hilltops. The palate is intense and concentrated, with loads of ripe dark berry, pepper and spice flavour. This wine is drinking perfectly now and will also benefit with time in the cellar…

About the Producer
In less than 5 years Moppity have captured the wine trade’s imagination with their wonderfully balanced, concentrated and expressive cool climate wines. Take note, this winery are one of the rising stars if Australian wine.
This is one to watch. The Hilltops in NSW has some huge potential. The high altitude vineyards in this region are producing some of the most epic cool climate Syrah/Shiraz and Cabernet on the market at the moment. With a relatively low profile (for now), the value to be had in this area is second to none. But get in quick, the word is getting out and it wont be that way for long. Love yourself the more refined side of Shiraz? The Hilltops is a place you really need to check out.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
