This is a top value ‘classic’ Cabernet Merlot blend from one of the quiet achievers in Margaret River.
Grown entirely on the Higher Plane vineyard in the Forest Grove locality of Margaret River, this is a blend of fruit declassified from higher tiered wines as well as some that was picked specifically for this blend.
It is a great buy for fans of this much-loved blend from the region, a wine ready to drink now or two age well over the medium-long term.
It was awarded 95 points from James Halliday along with his comments that “It’s impossible not to like a wine such as this.” and Gary Walsh noted its “Admirable structure for a wine at this price point.”
Good buying, any way you dice it.
What It Tastes Like
“Red and black fruits, baking spices, dark chocolate and cedar wood. Medium bodied, good depth of fruit and flavour – fleshy and bold – with some tobacco flavours, firm ripe tannin, plenty of power through the finish. Admirable structure for a wine at this price points. Value.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
95 points. “Estate-grown, small batch fermentation, matured in French oak for up to 18 months. A generously built palate with luscious cassis to the fore, cleverly supported by cedary oak and ripe tannins on the finish. It’s impossible not to like a wine such as this.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

About the Producer
The Higher Plane wines are made by Mark Messenger. These are excellent quality wines from Margaret River, grown on the estate vineyard located to the south of Margaret River township. The property was established in 1997 by Craig and Cathy with an aim to produce unique wines that speak of their little slice of the region. With the excellent critical acclaim they have received of late, it would seem that dream is being well and truly realised.
Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the truly Nobel grapes. An inherently structural variety, Cabernet when handled gently can produce majestic wines of grace and beauty that mature gloriously with time in the bottle. Australian Cabernet runs the full gamut of style: from lighter, more finely boned versions from regions such as the Yarra Valley, through the exquisitely complex and firm wines of Margaret River to the intensely powerful wines from the Coonawarra, there is much to explore in the world of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon.
