The Peake is the most elite composite blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Hickinbotham Clarendon vineyard in McLaren Vale.
The Shiraz is made by Charlie Seppelt, the Cabernet by American Cabernet specialist Chris Carpenter. They combine the best, most luxurious components of each season’s haul into this, their premier red wine.
It is a formidable yet supple beast that James Halliday noted was “A classic Australian blend of exceptional quality, destined to outlive most who taste it.” The 2014 vintage is superb receiving 96 points from Mr. Halliday and 95 points from Mike Bennie.
A beautiful example of this unique Australian red wine style, one that will reward the patient for many years to come.
What It Tastes Like
“One of the stars of our recent regional tasting (GW). Serious, brooding bouquet of red and black berries, briar, clove and cinnamon wood as subtle backdrop, bitter dark chocolate, just a whiff of Aussie bush character. Beauty. Medium weight, glides gloriously and evenly across the palate, a quiet lake of dark fruit, spice, wood, swirls of graphite-like tannins. It’s superb. Shuts you up.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
96 points. “Exceptionally potent and powerful, initially giving the (false) impression its alcohol is more than 14%. Retasting brings it back into perspective, the two varieties bonded, yet each preserving its varietal integrity and structural architecture. A classic Australian blend of exceptional quality, destined to outlive most who taste it.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

This is the most immediately impressive, seductive, comforting luxury of the 2014 Hickinbothams. It reacts faster to an airing in the decanter, mellowing nicely, but may well outlive the three varietal wines.
Not an accurate reflection of either of its component varieties, this is a drink of a different order again, like a variety all its own: something new that grew rather than any varieties old and blended.
The Peake offers many of the fresh floral and fancy aromatic dainties of the Brooks’ Road Shiraz and the Trueman Cabernet, this time these lovely natural adornments sit above a mellow but slightly gothic cellar of aromas much, much deeper and more mysterious to the modern hi-rise: these conserves, smoky cured meats and wintergreen, even fresh-hewn blackwood lignin, bring feelings of things long past.

The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
