The Nerus is a wine new to Grosset portfolio.
After years spent experimenting with blending trials, combining Shiraz with everything from Mataro to Malbec, Jeffrey struck gold when he added a splash of the Sicilian variety Nero d’Avola to his locally grown Shiraz.
The Nero gave a lift of perfume and a suppleness of tannin which perfectly complemented the dark, savoury Shiraz Grosset had at his disposal. It’s an enchanting wine, ready to drink now or ponder in the medium term.
With 93 points from Mike Bennie and a tiny production of only 300 dozen, this rare bird from the Grosset flock will not be available for long.
What It Tastes Like
“Wonderful drinking. So aromatic, so flavoursome, so slender in tannin and crunchy acidity. Strong aromas of black olive, dark cherry, graphite and anise. The palate is medium weight, frisky, crisp and stretches in refreshing swirls long through the palate. Instant appeal; a fine boned, bright red with some additional detail to please those wishing to ponder a bit.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
97 points “Part of the ongoing experiments by Jeffrey Grosset to determine what variety will be the best junior partner for his shiraz - nero d’Avola emerged in front of malbec and mataro this vintage, and looks as if it will continue to be the best. Grosset is seeking perfume, structure and drinkability, which this has in spades. It’s simply bloody gorgeous.”

About the Producer
Jeffery Grosset has set a blistering pace for winemakers in the Clare Valley since 1981. He is regarded by many as the premier Riesling producer in the country and has been recognised internationally as one of the finest winemakers in Australia. His attention to detail, both in his organically farmed vineyards and his winery, has given rise to a portfolio of effortlessly articulate wines that are the envy of many.
The Clare Valley knows what it does, and does it very, very well. Riesling and Shiraz are the rockstars of the region and with some of the most famous wines in the county coming from this small pocket of SA, the Clare’s reputation for quality only grows year on year.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
