- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Graillot Syrah is the Australian project by Croze-Hermitage winemaker Alain Graillot. The 2014 wines are made in cahoots with Yarra Valley winemaking wizz, Luke Lambert. The fruit for this wine comes from the upper section of the Heathcote vineyard managed by Graillot, it's more detailed and complex than the wines made from the lower part - barrel selection also comes into play. Luke's influence is highly evident in the 2014 releases. A combination of whole bunch and whole berries ferment makes this the most lively and honest version of the wine to date. Elegant, savoury and tightly wound, this 96 point release is one very sophisticated Australian Syrah.
What it Tastes Like
"Excellent colour; has more texture to the palate than Project No. 2, and is more elegant. A Socratean style (Socrates dissatisfied). The dried herb/spice nuances add something No. 2 lacks, but that's not the end of the story. Two very different and accessible wines." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

There are two wines released each year: Graillot Syrah and Syrah No 2. Both wines come from the ‘Clos Graillot’ plot of vines, with the fruit from the top half of the block above a geological fault providing the material for the intense and finely detailed Graillot Syrah. Hand-picked from the top of the block, 50% whole bunches(50% new)% whole berries, including small parcels of carbonic maceration.

About the Producer
Graillot is a fascinating venture, and they’ve quickly gained a loyal cult following amongst lovers of Heathcote Shiraz (like us!). The label is a collaboration between Australian wine importer Robert Walters and iconic Northern Rhone Valley winemaker Alain Graillot. After importing Graillot’s wines for many years, Robert decided to utilise the Frenchman’s Shiraz/Syrah growing expertise to help him utilise the high quality Heathcote vineyard he had at his disposal.
Graillot is the delicious result!
Heathcote’s reputation is for big Shiraz. And they do it so well. But the times they are a changin’ with Italian varieties such as Fiano, Sangiovese, Nero d’Avola and Sagrantino all finding themselves well at home in the ancient Cambrian soils.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
