- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Rocky Gully label belongs to Frankland Estate - one of the leading producers in Frankland River. Family owned and operated since 1988, Frankland Estate put a major emphasis on organic grown fruit that reflects its terroir rather than the hand of the winemaker.
Their wines are distinctly elegant and ‘old world’ in style and their 2014 Shiraz is a great example of what they’re all about.
It’s also an accurate reflection of the modern transformation of Australian Shiraz , with many wineries (and customers) focusing on perfume, elegance, and balance. It even has a small portion of co-fermented Viognier (in the style of Cote-Rotie, Rhone Valley) blended in for heightened aromatics and depth.
It’s super easy-drinking with plenty of interest and with 94 points from James Halliday, it highlights the incredible value for money to be had in this region.
What It Tastes Like
The nose is dominated by aromas of pepper, spice and licorice, with subtle dark fruits. The palate is medium-bodied and finely structured, with flavours of plums, dark cherries and more spice. Balance, interest and length.
94 points. “There is a small addition of viognier, but with no claim of co-fermentation. The power and intensity of Frankland River shiraz is on full display here, with an edgy quality to the black fruits, spice and licorice that give this wine tension and interest; fine-grained tannins add a savoury note to the finish.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
All the hallmarks of great cool climate shiraz with a little dollop of viognier to give aromatic lift whilst adding another dimension to the texture of the wine.
REGION Frankland River, Western Australia
VINTAGE 2014 A wet spring then dry warm summer provided an ideal growing season, very cold nights in the last month prior to harvest ensured good ripeness and intensity of fruit. Harvest in mid April.
ASSESSMENT Bright red fruits, with plum, black pepper and spice with subtle integration of oak.
A middle weighted palate with bright juicy fruit and a lifted integration of black pepper, plum and spice notes. Creamy texture and subtle oak provides a poised finish.
The tiny addition of viognier with vibrant shiraz fruit notes gives aromatic lift and subtle texture which makes the wine more approachable in its youth. Good acidity and fine tannins combine to create a soft finishing, well weighted cool climate style. Ideal food wine which will complement many dishes including pork, lamb and duck. Drink now for the next 5 to 7 years.

About the Producer
Frankland Estate are one of the leading producers in the Frankland River region. Family owned and operated since 1988, their major focus on their certified organically grown fruit that reflects its terroir rather than the hand of the winemaker. Their cool climate Rieslings are regarded as some of the best in the region and the country with several single vineyard releases that could be a contender for Australia’s Best Rizza. Frankland Estate is a cutting a mean wave through the industry and picking up a lot of recognition in the process.
Frankland River is rapidly becoming one of WA’s most important wine-producing regions. With a cooler climate than Margaret River, it offers amazing scope for the exploration of varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Shiraz. The wines have an elegance and a finesse to them and at this point are remarkably good value. One of the jewels of the Great Southern area that has a big future ahead of it.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
