Anthony Fikkers cares not about the status quo, and his creative Yarra Valley wines have really caught our attention.
This is his take on a ‘Bordeaux Blanc’, and really challenges convention with how this style often looks. It’s made in tiny quantities (70 doz total) with minimal intervention and precious little additions.
The blend of 50% Sauvignon blanc, 39% Semillon and 11% Muscadelle brings a new face to the classic dry white.
It’s complex yet smashable, familiar yet challenging and great either with food or on its own for something a little different. With 93 points from Gary Walsh and his comments that it “feels at ease with itself, is interesting and drinks beautifully” this is a must try!
What It Tastes Like
Feels sort of fleshy in the mouth, all citrus pulp and skin with some blossoms from the trees they were picked from. There is a slight hebaceousness to the nose but a lovely freshness on the palate. SBS with a twist. Intriguing little number.

Nice juiciness to this wine – all oranges, floral and grassy perfume, lime and pineapple also has a kind of creamy oatmeal flavour and texture with it too. Light chalkiness, fresh but subdued acidity, lovely bright limey finish of admirable length. As with most Fikkers wines, feels at ease with itself, is interesting and drinks beautifully.”

Fikkers is the one man operation of Yarra Valley winemaker Anthony Fikkers, and it’s a name we will be hearing much more of. Working with a range of local growers, Fikkers is all about small batch, hand made wines made in unique styles and with minimal intervention. You won’t see the wines on many store shelves because there just aren’t enough of them, but they are absolutely worth trying and add enormous variety to the Yarra Valley landscape.
