If you’re on the hunt for high-value easy drinking wines, Margaret River hasn’t always been a happy hunting ground. “Cheap and cheerful” is not generally what comes to mind from the area, but every now and then something like this pops its head up…
The Discovery Cabernet is made up of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, with portions of Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc added to smooth off the edges and fill out the palate.
“The blend delivers palate extension, fleshiness, and early approachability.” says winemaker Bruce Jukes and he’s worked this vintage into a great place.
If you’re looking for good quality mid-week Cabernet, in the words of Gary Walsh, this “Does the job nicely.”
There is scarcely a Cabernet under $25 worth buying from Margaret River, but this is definitely one of them.
What It Tastes Like
“Juicy raspberry and cherry, spice and mocha. Medium bodied, light grainy tannin, nice shape in the mouth, not terribly deep or complex, but very pleasant and easy to drink. Does the job nicely.” - Gary Walsh The Wine Front)
90 points. “Entry level wines from this excellent producer, I suspect, for enjoying in the short term.

13.8 % Alc Vol | 8.2 Standard Drinks Cabernet Sauvignon’s sculpted tannins and lifted perfumes combine with a splash of Malbec’s fleshy tannins and red berry fragrances. The blend delivers palate extension, fleshiness and early approachability. A combination of personality and purpose for those who enjoy soft tannins, succulent red fruits and simply love wine.
Rich aromas of currants, plums and cedar, complimented by hints of cloves, vanilla pod and glazed cherries. The palate is laden with opulent, coating tannin and flavours of mocha, summer berries and liquorice.

About the Producer
Domaine Naturalist is another of the ‘new guard’ Margaret River producers to keep an eye out for. Owner/winemaker Bruce Jukes has a wealth of winemaking experience both here and abroad, including a stint at Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic Niebaum Coppola winery in the Napa Valley. His wines are made from traditional Margaret River varieties and blends, but with a modern focus on elegance, freshness and balance. Great value too!
Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the truly Nobel grapes. An inherently structural variety, Cabernet when handled gently can produce majestic wines of grace and beauty that mature gloriously with time in the bottle. Australian Cabernet runs the full gamut of style: from lighter, more finely boned versions from regions such as the Yarra Valley, through the exquisitely complex and firm wines of Margaret River to the intensely powerful wines from the Coonawarra, there is much to explore in the world of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon.
