- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
It's great to see Cabernet Franc being made in these bright and modern styles. It's taking the 'seriousness' out of Bordeaux varieties and making them more appealing to the Australian culture. Cab Franc flying solo can be a beautiful thing when handled right. Luke Lambert nails the MO here. The 2014 Denton View Shed Cab Franc is sourced from the warmer, north-western facing slope of the Denton View Hill vineyard. The 2014 yields we small but packed with flavour and it shows in this release. With all the stalks removed the berries were fermented whole in search of the purest, high-toned aromatics the variety can offer and it's safe to say, mission accomplished Luke, it's a belter.
What it Tastes Like
This smells so good. Perfume wafts from the glass, all purple fruit and black olives with earth and fresh picked herbs. The tannins are fine and powdery, the fruit is sweetly set but with a savoury backbone. Delicious modern Australian red wine.
View Hill is an isolated hill in the middle of the Yarra Valley on the north side of the Yarra River. It exists because it is a granite ‘plug’ from the late Devonian Age [370 million years ago], sitting above the surrounding softer sandstones and siltstones of the Valley. Sourced from the warmer North Western slope of the Denton View Hill.

The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
C’Franc, as it is affectionately know, is often one of the more overlooked varieties from the Bordeaux region. Traditionally used as mainly a blending variety, this grape has been experiencing somewhat of a reinvigoration lately as more and more producers recognise its potential to create highly aromatic, crunchy and delectable reds in its own right.
