The Fechner Vineyard is one of the few Eastern facing vineyards in Eden Valley. CRFT duo Candice and Frewin believe that this site is perfectly suited to making great Shiraz. The warm days and cool nights making for long ripening and excellent flavour intensity. This coupled with their sensitive, minimalist winemaking makes for a beautiful wine. They made only 120 dozen Shiraz from this vineyard in 2014. It has glorious shape and impeccable purity, a wine destined for great things in time. James Halliday awarded it 97 points making it the highest rated wine from CRFT to date.
What it Tastes Like
"Standard CRFT shiraz fermentation, except for the much later harvest date of 1 Mar and modest alcohol, 120 dozen made. Supple, yet complex, intense, yet rounded; savoury, yet deeply fruited. This has all the attributes of fine wine at its zenith. Yes, it's a great vineyard, and from the cooler Eden Valley, but Candice Helbig has coaxed every ounce of flavour from this medium-bodied wine, giving a sarcastic salute to those who think shiraz's life starts with 14.5% alcohol, and needs yet more to obtain balance - an attribute this wine has in spades. Drink now or in 30 years." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

The Vineyard Fechner Vineyard is owned and farmed by brothers Michael and Graeme Fechner near Moculta in the northern end of the Eden Valley. The Fechner Vineyard is unique, being one of only a few eastern-facing vineyards in the Eden Valley region. The eastern slope offers cooler daytime temperatures together with higher altitude and cool valley winds, which produces optimum growing conditions for Shiraz. Site location: Moculta – Eden Valley Map coordinates: -34.475005,139.071367 Clone: 1654 Planted: 1999 Elevation: 345m Aspect: East facing Harvest: 21st March 2014 Tonnes: 1.78T Soil: Broken Grey schist integrated with shallow limestone and red clay, very complex ancient soil. The Vineyard Hand-picked and destemmed to an open-top tank for fermentation and gently hand plunged two to three times daily. Pressed directly to oak with 3 weeks barrel fermentation followed by 10 months maturation – 60% French, 40% American, with 20% new oak. Unfined, unfiltered, vegan. Bottled: 2nd February 2015 Production: 1,466 bottles – 120 dozen The Wine Somewhat shy at first, our Eden Valley Shiraz playfully opens with cardamom, tea leaves and dense dark berries. The mouth has a burst of sweet velvety fruit, charred with dark chocolate-coated oranges and layered with earthy tannins, just like the site. Every glass offers more to an unfolding journey, elegantly rich and alluring. Drinking: Enjoy now or cellar to 2030.

About the Producer
The CRFT story is exciting, and I just love everything about it. Husband and wife team of Frewin Ries and Candice Helbig both gained extensive winemaking experience for large companies like Cloudy Bay (Frewin) and Hardys (Helbig), before launching into CRFT with the 2013 vintage. They only produce tiny volumes of all their wines, and their philosophy is all about minimally interfered with single vineyard wines that truly express their time and place. High quality, individual wines.
Eden Valley is the cooler more elegant brother of the brawny Barossa. Renowned for slick Shiraz, floral and lifted Riesling and even some stonkingly good Cabernet, the wines of this area provide a great counterpoint to the usual out and out power that South Australian wine has become known for.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
