Traditionally, Geelong is more famous for its outstanding quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay than it’s Shiraz, but here you go, Brown Magpie blow us away again (like it’s still a surprise) with the release of their 2014 Shiraz.
This is grown on a Single Vineyard on the Brown Magpie estate.
From the almost perfect vintage that was 2014, their Shiraz typifies what cool-climate winemaking is all about - balance and elegance.
With 95 points from James Halliday, this makes for gorgeous drinking and is one more smash hit in the recent successes from this champion Geelong producer.

95 points. “Hand-picked and destemmed over 2 weeks, a small proportion of each day’s pick crushed, the remainder destemmed for whole berry fermentation, 7% pressed before dryness to complete fermentation in barrel, the remainder pressed dry, 12 months in oak. Good colour; as elegant as it is intense and complex; a haunting bouquet of spice, truffle and violets leads into a palate that adds wild blackberry and superfine – but all important – tannins. Deep garnet, purple hue: the bouquet is full of ripe black and red fruits, pushing the envelope but not overstepping the mark; rich and spicy on the palate, the tannin and acidity draw out the finish evenly; generous but balanced.

About the Producer
Based in the Surf Coast sub-region of Geelong near the beginning of the Great Ocean Road, Brown Magpie owners Shane and Loretta Breheny are kicking some serious goals with their Pinot, Shiraz and Pinot Gris/Grigio. Their wines are all effortlessly flavoursome and complex, with the single vineyard Pinots in particular rating amongst the country’s best value examples of the variety.
This Victorian region rocks some very serious wines. Pinot Noir from this area, depending on who you talk too, is arguably the best in the country. Phenomenal output for the size of it. The wines from this area are idiosyncratic and have an earthy, sensual quality. Burgundian varieties, Syrah, hell, even Pinot Gris does exceptionally well here. To be honest, it’s very hard to go wrong when buying from Geelong.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
