- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Every so often, the hype around a vintage turns out to be true.
The 2014 reds of the Hunter Valley have collectively delivered on the promise of the season. The growers and winemakers of the region say it’s the best in 40 years, and they might be right.
This is a brilliant offering from winemaker Andrew Leembruggen. For the price, it is legitimately one of the best buys for 2014 Hunter Valley Shiraz you are likely to come across.
It’s built in a classic style, with all the potency a medium bodied wine can muster. Drinking beautifully now or in more than a decade’s time, the reviews of 95 points from James Halliday and 94 points from Gary Walsh only confirm that if you love Hunter Shiraz, the 2014’s are what you want to load up the truck with.
What It Tastes Like
“Blackberry and raspberry, showing a bit of creamy spicy oak as a young pup, but it’s fairly high quality and well done, then gentle earthiness and subtle floral notes. Medium bodied, silky web of fine grained tannin, lovely purity of fruit – forest berries mainly – bright but intense, with well bedded acidity and a long clean minerally finish. Seamless and all just so. Such high quality wine with a long life ahead.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
95 points “Rich and luscious and sporting a heavy dose of creamy, coffeed oak. The fruit is up to the task, but it’s a close-run thing. Ultra fine-grained tannin ripples through a mainstay of cherry, plum and earth notes. Lengthy finish. It arguably would have been better again had there been a lighter hand on the oak tiller but the grandness of the fruit, and vintage, ultimately shines through.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
94 points. “There’s been a lot of talk about 2014 Hunter reds being a one in 40 years kind of vintage, and so far my tastings from tank, barrel and bottle seem to bear this out.

About the Producer
This is one of a new wave of Hunter Valley wineries that have popped up over the last few years. With a wealth of experience from not only making wine in the Hunter but elsewhere, winemaker Andrew Leembruggen is bringing a contemporary twist to some traditional Hunter wine styles.
The Hunter Valley is the home of Semillon in Australia. Arguably the best in the world, Hunter Semillon is one of Australia’s most truly unique wine styles. Add to that the fact that have been producing some of Australia’s best quality Shiraz for over a century and you can see why this is one of our most loved wine regions. But with a new generation of winemakers comes innovation. Now we are seeing risks being taken, new varieties being planted and some inspired winemaking which is writing a new chapter in the Hunter Valley’s rich history. We can’t wait to see what happens next.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
