About The Wine
With all of his playing and experimenting with alternative varieties, it comes as little surprise to see Brad Wehr launch a quality Tempranillo under his Amato Vino label.
This comes from his home in Margaret River rather than the Riverland in SA, specifically from the northern sub-region of Yallingup. Warmer temperatures there suit this famous Spanish variety which in Brad’s words, “loves a bit of heat”.
It’s a lovely style of Tempranillo - quite lush and creamy but with flashes of spice and herbs. Good structure and very hard to put down.
As Brad says it will suit early drinking but a couple years in the cellar won’t harm it either. Nice one Brad!
What It Tastes Like
“Dark ruby red in colour. Dusty black and red-fruits greets the nose, and caramel/vanilla oak. Typical Tempranillo – dark choc-cherry spice, punchy fruits, firm acidity, and a delightful ‘redskin’ character lifts the nose. On the floral spectrum we see savoury herbal bay/curry leaf and some eastern spice.
The palate is equal parts juicy and savoury with a firm backbone of acidity and tannin. Red-fruits and blackberry flavours, mocha/chocolate, some darker roasted spices, vanilla, all rounded out with and some toasty aged oak characters.” - Brad Wehr
93 points. “Plum, cola, dark chocolate and mandarin flavours will have you coming back for more. This delivers the goods and also maintains tidy shape as it runs along the palate.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
This Spanish favourite is grown in the northern Margaret River sub-region of Yallingup and loves a bit of heat. The grapes were picked late in the season as the leaves were reddening and the vintage end was in sight. Wild-fermented in open bins before pressing to aged barriques and hogsheads, matured for 20 months.

Brad Wehr’s Amato Vino label is equal parts traditional and experimental. His Wine By Brad and Mantra labels exemplify the best of classic Margaret River varieties while the Amato Vino label showcases some of the most exciting experimental wines in the country. From innovative winemaking techniques and emerging varieties the eclectic and innovative, Amato Vino is a name to watch in the West.
Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Tempranillo is a hot-blooded Spanish variety that has found a happy home in many Australian wine regions. Typically, Tempranillo will be medium bodied, showing silky darker fruits and tannins riddled with exotic spices. The wines are more-ish and incredibly well suited to alfresco Australian dining. Unsurprisingly, Tempranillo is one of the country’s most popular emerging varieties and is set to have a big future on Australian shores.
