- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Yarra Yering Dry White No. 1 is one of the country’s most elite examples of Semillon blend inspired by the whites of Bordeaux.
It is constructed specifically to be a cellaring style of wine; tight and racy in its youth and luscious at maturity.
The 2013 vintage of the blend was harvested entirely from the original 1969 plantings of Semillon and Chardonnay. It was fermented in barrel and went through full malolactic fermentation.
It received 95 points from James Halliday and with several years in bottle, is now starting to come into its own. An exemplary wine full of complexity and interest.
What It Tastes Like
“A 90/10% blend of semillon and chardonnay; crushed, with skin contact prior to pressing, fermented in used French barriques, 100% mlf. Bright straw-green; a complex bouquet with some smoky/funky characters notwithstanding the mlf, the palate built on a foundation of crisp acidity; the lemon, lemongrass fruit of semillon will grow and expand with honey and toast over the next 5+ years.” - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

A Bordeaux inspired white blend of 87% Semillon and 13% Chardonnay, both planted in 1969. The wine is fine and austere as a youngster, with high acid and fresh bright fruit flavours. As it develops in the bottle the wine gains new dimensions in developed tobacco leaf, citrus and lemon characters. Complex and fine, this is a sophisticated food wine.
Hand harvested and crushed to encourage skin contact to lend flavour and texture to the palate. Basket pressed with minimal settling time before transferring to old used French oak barriques for primary fermentation followed by malolactic fermentation and 11 months maturation.Bottled via gravity without filtration.

About the Producer
Yarra Yering are one of the Yarra Valley’s most prestigious and historic wineries. The original vines planted in 1969 form the backbone of this vineyard and were some of the first in the region since the collapse of the local wine trade in 1920. Today, Yarra Yering stands as a benchmark producer, and with the formidable winemaking mind of Sarah Crowe at the helm, looks to be entering a second golden age. Sarah was named James Halliday’s Winemaker of the Year for 2017 off the back of her exceptional work with the 2014, 2015 and 2016 releases.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
