- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
There’s some excellent value to be found in Great Southern Chardonnay.
This release from Willoughby Park is right in the pocket. It has flavour, balance and high-impact without falling into ‘big Chardonnay’ territory.
With 94 points from James Halliday, it’s ripe, ready and raring to go. A Chardonnay for those who still want some weight and oomph in their glass. Good buying here.
What It Tastes Like
“Hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, 100% barrel-fermented (40% wild), 10 months in French oak, partial mlf. A fractionally slimmed down version of Ironrock, but with no shortage of drive or freshness to its precocious array of flavours.” - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

Winter was relatively mild and we had well above average rainfall in late Spring which resulted in good solid water content and good spring growth to start the season. Fruit set was good and even, which along with strong growth resulted in even ripening. Summer temperatures were very even, except for one heat spike on January 12th. Sunshine hours were consistent and summer rainfall low resulting in very little disease pressure. Strong, healthy canopies, plenty of sunshine and cooling afternoon breezes from the Southern Ocean meant that in- tense flavour, delicate aromatics and above average natural acid levels were present in the white varieties.
Whole bunch pressed and fermented in French oak barriques. Some barrels were wild ferment , the balance inoculated with yeast. Seven months maturation before bottling.
Closure: Screw Cap
Bottle Size: 750ml

About the Producer
The Willoughby Park wines have received great accolades from across the wine industry, including a five star rating from James Halliday. The winery processes around 150 tonne, with an almost even split between reds and whites. Vintage traditionally begins late February, with Reisling the first fruit making its way into the winery. The Kalgan IronRock range utilises the best of the premium fruit from the Estate-owned vineyards, around 20%, and showcases the benefits of hand-picked fruit, natural yeast, open fermenters and first class French oak.
The Great Southern is the largest wine region in the country. Though more and more, the label “Great Southern” is becoming redundant. It is the sub-regional exploration of terroir which is distinguishing this region. From Frankland River to Porongorup, from Mount Barker to Denmark, the detailed and stylish wines emerging from these sub-regions are some of the most intriguing in the country. No longer a “poor man’s Margaret River”, whether you love Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz or Pinot, this stunning cool climate region will blow you away with the value and refinement inherent in everything it produces. And the good thing is, it is only getting better.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
