This is an excellent release of what must be one of the Adelaide Hills’ more unique takes on Sauvignon Blanc.
The Lane Vineyard is one of the Hills’ premier producers, and while they are best known for their Shiraz and Chardonnay, I’ve always had a soft spot for this wine - it’s just delicious!
It’s a Bordeaux white blend in both its varietal selection (72& Sauv Blanc / 28% Semillon) and its style. An astute mix of new and used French oak and stainless steel has resulted in oodles of texture yet serious refreshment. As James Halliday said in his 94 point review, “It offers a totally delicious, seamless marriage of fruit and oak.”
A really unique, versatile, high-quality white blend and as The Lane say themselves, “It’s Sauvignon Blanc, but not as you know it.”
What It Tastes Like
Extremely complex and eyebrow-raising bouquet, full of freshly cut citrus, passionfruit, guava and kaffir lime. Nutty, savoury oak chimes in on the richly flavoured palate, with The Lane’s distinctive minerality coming through the finish. Waves of flavour, zingy acidity and nice grip. Thought-provoking.
94 points. “A 70/30% blend, 70%, separately fermented and matured in a complex amalgam of stainless steel, new and used French oak. It offers a totally delicious, seamless marriage of fruit and oak, and is a very smart entry point wine, with a track record of maturing gracefully over 5+ years.”
