In 2005, Claire and James Lance began leasing the Lance's Vineyard in the Yarra Valley with an eye to make wines that told the story of this site, one which they believe to be among the country's finest. The Pinot Noir is grown on the natural amphitheatre planted in 1975. The soils are tough, the vines placed under duress to produce fruit with good depth of flavour and unique character. The fruit is handled gently, every effort taken to keep the winemaking process as uncomplicated as possible. The 2013 is an excellent release. Rating an impressive 97 points from James Halliday and 95 points from Campbell Mattinson, this small batch release is among the region's best Pinot Noir's. Only 177 dozen made.
What it Tastes Like
"Estate-grown, all operations by hand, including picking. Very good hue and depth; a complex pinot, great now, greater still in the future; black cherries, wafts of warm spices, and a hint of forest on the bouquet foretells an intense, yet finely boned, palate, balance and extreme length its hallmarks. 177 dozen made." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

It feels quality from the outset. It’s herbal and spicy, dry and tannic, and yet it’s not a slave to its style; fruit is the engine, deep in a varietal context, with oak as the gleaming Duco. The power, the poise, the seduction, the dry length. It’s all working for the greater good." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
Grown predominantly on our original 1976 vines, together with adjoining 1998 and 2003 plantings, all with a steep Northerly aspect. These vines are hand pruned, dressed and harvested. Made without added yeast, fining or filtration, this wine is estate bottled.

The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
