- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Marc Scalzo has been nominated for Winemaker of the Year by Gourmet Traveller Wine off the back of some stellar releases under his Piano Piano label.
This Shiraz is one of those wines.
It’s powerful and plush, lavished with premium oak and feels quintessentially Beechworth.
James Halliday called it a “Wine that makes you sit up and pay attention” in his 95 point review which was seconded by Campell Mattinson who called it a wine with “All the right moves.”
This is, hands down, one of the best sub $40 reds from this region and should absolutely be on your hit list if you like Shiraz with some punch.
What It Tastes Like
“The wine: it’s classy. Juicy, spicy, boysenberried, black cherried. A touch of jellied sweetness, in a good way. A complement of meatiness, studded with cloves. Smoky oak. All the right moves. Fine, spice shot tannin just another tick in its favour.” - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
95 points “Hand-picked and sorted, crushed with a high portion of whole berries and some whole bunches for a wild open ferment, 12 days on skins, matured for 20 months in French oak (50% new). This is a wine that makes you sit up and pay attention, its finish all class, but plenty happening along the way with its dark cherry fruit impregnated by black pepper, spice and licorice. The tannin and oak management is impressive, particularly the latter, for the wine has absorbed all the new oak.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
93 points. “Piano Piano is on the golden mile, so to speak, on the Beechworth-Wangaratta Road, a stretch of road that is also home to Giaconda, Castagna, Savaterre, Domenica, Golden Ball and others. There’s a good map of the Beechworth wine region here – it also shows clearly where the Piano Piano vineyard sits.

2013 Henry’s Block Shiraz
2013 is our second vintage of Henry’s Block Shiraz which was planted in 2008. The wine shows the potential of the block to make premium cool climate Shiraz. This wine was traditionally made and was fermented using wild indigenous yeast in open vats and hand plunged to extract the tannins as gently as possible. The wine was matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (25% New, 25% 1yo, 25% 2yo and 25% 3yo) before being prepared for bottling with minimal filtration.
This wine has classic cool climate pepper and spice, cherry and blueberries aromas. The palate has complex red berries, spice and a charry cedar finish. The fine chalky tannins add structure to this elegant wine. Drink now – 2022
Closure: Screw Cap
Bottle Size: 750ml
Beechworth is a small wine producing region with a big reputation. The distinctive terroir in this part of the country produces some of our most iconic wines. If you want serious Chardonnay or Rhone-inspired Shiraz/Syrah, you want to get to know Beechworth. Some of the most powerful cool climate wines in the country hail from here, and some of our future stars are making it their home. The future looks very bright for this champion Victorian region.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
