- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
This is a unique wine in the Australian landscape.
Blaufrankisch is red grape variety planted widely throughout Austria. Hahndorf Hill’s winemaker Larry Jacobs spotted the variety’s potential in the Adelaide Hills some years ago and has made some very good examples of ‘Blau’ for almost a decade.
It’s a late ripening variety - hence its success in the cooler Adelaide Hills climate. It’s a wonderfully fragrant and supple wine that gets better each release.
This is a joyful red, medium to light in weight and loaded with spicy blueberry flavours. While there is plenty of structure in the mouth, it really is fun to drink right now. If you want to try something one-of-a-kind, then this will be right up your alley.
What It Tastes Like
“Light but insistent. Juicy fruit meets throaty, spicy tannin, though the juiciness of the fruit clearly cuts through to victory. Sweet-sour cherries, Xmas cake, cinnamon. Interesting wine from various angles.” - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

Tasting notes: Blaufrankisch is a red grape variety that produces wines of superb quality in its homeland of Austria, where it ranks as the pre-eminent grape in the red wine province of Burgenland. Hahndorf Hill Winery was the first producer of Blaufrankisch in Australia, with our debut vintage being in 2008. This wine has a hauntingly beautiful nose of rich blueberry pie and black cherries. The palate is silky smooth with a tumble of berries, gentle spice and a smudge of caramel, all perfectly wrapped in generous yet gentle tannin. Match this beautiful wine with duck, quail, lamb and venison - and if you ever need to enjoy a red with your favourite seafood, this is it!
