With the release of their new state of the art tasting facility in McLaren Vale, Toby and Emmanuelle Bekkers decided that they need a new wine to launch along with the new digs.
“What better than a marriage of McLaren Vale’s two standout varieties?” they thought, and so the first vintage of the Bekkers Syrah Grenache was born.
The fruit is taken from three vineyards, the Grenache from the same as the Bekkers Grenache, the Abr vineyard and the Shiraz component from the famous Hickinbothom and Gateway vineyards. This fruit is highly sort after. It does not come cheap. And rightfully so.
The first release has been well received by all, Mike Bennie said, “Plenty to like here. Plenty.” and gave it 93+ points, and Jancis Robinson commented on its “Impressive fruit concentration and purity”.
What It Tastes Like
Blue fruits, black fruits, a hint of violet, spice. Definitely in a ‘cooler climate’ style for McLaren Vale. Elegance, finesse, complex yet vibrant and refreshing. Balance is the key. You can see the French winemaking influence in the glass. Class all the way.
93+ points. “Pedal to the metal on a rolling start; so it seems for Toby and Emmanuelle Bekkers and their eponymous wine project. Husband and wife, celebrated viticulturist and winemaker, respectively. This is sourced from Abri vineyard from which the excellent 2013 Bekkers Grenache wine comes from, blended with shiraz parcels from Hickinbotham and Gateway vineyards. Around 20% is whole bunch fermented, sees no inoculation of yeast, basket pressed to used French oak.”
“Such potent perfume. Almost an assault in sweet, pretty fruit characters chaperoned with musk, cola, briar, anise. Firm in texture, chewy tendrils of tannins amongst a pleasing, saturating slosh of red and black fruit with a big belt of dusty, peppery spice. While flavours linger, there’s a rugged earthiness and little jag of acidity in the finish that feels like it needs time to mellow. Still, plenty to like here. Plenty.”

A blend of 70% Shiraz and 30% Grenache, this wine rests equidistant between the fragrance of our Grenache and the mouth-filling generosity of our Syrah. It exhibits the soft, silky texture that we see as the signature of all our wines.

About the Producer
Toby Bekkers is a man with a very clear vision for his work. To produce the very best wines of McLaren Vale and take them to the world… To listen to him talk about it is inspiring, the wines themselves, are prodigious. There are only three wines in the range, Syrah, Grenache and a blend of the two. Toby spent years as viticulturist for Wirra Wirra, scouring the area for the best vineyards for his own project. Now, with his French winemaking wife Emannuelle, the vision is coming to fruition, the quality purely sensational.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils.
