Grenache is the base variety for some of the worlds finest red wines. We are lucky enough in this country to have some of the oldest plantings of this variety anywhere in the world.
The Bekkers Grenache is sourced from from an old, dry grown vineyard near the McLaren Vale township. Toby has had his eye on this vineyard for many years and now gets a small amount of fruit from these “old warrior” vines to make his wonderful expression of the variety.
He says that, “Grenache augments the subtle differences of vintage and vineyard in sharper relief than Shiraz.” to which end he sees the 2013 vintage as “a little brighter and more fragrant than the denser, darker 2012. In my opinion, it’s a better wine for it…“.
This is a Grenache that makes a statement. It says that McLaren Vale Grenache can rival any in the world, and looking at examples like this and others from the likes of Steve Pannell and Yangarra, it’s pretty hard to argue with.
What It Tastes Like
Soft woody notes and wild cherries, with a floral perfume of musk and violet. So luscious, laden with cherry choc notes and spice. The brightness and depth to it keeps you coming back for more. Layered with sweet upfront fruit, spice through the palate, finishes with a grainy, sour cherry kick. Pretty serious stuff.

There’s a bold, juicy wash of ripe, plush dark fruit that feels sweet at first then lifts on the rivulets of mouthwatering acidity set underneath. It’s ultra perfumed and gorgeous to swill around the mouth before swallowing. Effortless drinking.”

95 points. “An impressive grenache with a deep red, purple-tinged hue. It smells of earth, nettles, dried herbs and chocolate. The palate is fleshy and smooth, supple and dense, with lovely texture and balance. Great concentration too, the finish extending well. Cellar 1-20 years.”

94 points “If I had two of the letter K in my name, I’d be tempted to place them ‘back to back’ too. I’m tasting from bottle number 0359, though I don’t know how many of them were made. Can confirm, of course, that it’s an absolute minimum of 359. Perfumed, laden with raspberries and spice, peppermint and chocolate. Medium bodied, silky smooth with fine lacy tannin, clean acidity, sweet fruit, though savoury through its core. Rings clear and long on the finish. Has a minor burr from alcohol, but with Grenache, you need to crack plenty of eggs to make a tasty omelette. This is a pretty tasty omelette.”

In keeping with the ‘13 vintage, our 2013 Grenache is a little brighter and more fragrant than the denser, darker 2012. In my opinion, it’s a better wine for it and I love its clarity of fruit. It’s no shrinking violet though, and has the capacity age beautifully.
