- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The 2012 Yarra Yering Dry Red No.1 is comprised of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with small parcels of Malbec and Petit Verdot.
The individual parcels were fermented in small open top fermenters, the final blend meant to showcase the season on this iconic Yarra Valley estate.
This is a glorious wine, the famous Yarra Valley Cabernet wine style vindicated in the contents of the bottle. James Halliday awarded it 97 points and noted, “this is a top-flight No. 1…“ and The Wine Fron’t Gary Walsh awarded it 96+ points praising it, “Such impressive structure and quality here. Superb. Will cellar a treat.”
This rare museum release of this iconic wine is only available in small amounts. It’s a wine destined for great things. The 2012 is only at the beginning of its long and distinguished life. It should be an essential part of any serious Australian cellar.
What It Tastes Like
“Blackcurrant, fresh blackberry, violet notes, tobacco and cedar, and a slightly twiggy but attractive varietal top note. Medium bodied, firm acidity and a sluice of powdery – you might call them gravelly – tannin that runs long and persists on the finish. Depth of fruit and black tea and tobacco savouries, the oak beautifully integrated and all just so. Such impressive structure and quality here. Superb. Will cellar a treat. Touch and go for a massive 97 points.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
97 points. “A cabernet sauvignon-dominant blend, with lesser amounts of merlot, malbec and petit verdot. Excellent hue and depth; this is a top-flight No. 1, fully reflecting the excellent vintage; the flavours are bold and luscious, yet the wine never threatens to lose its shape; first there is the multi-variety complexity, second the perfectly balanced ripe tannins. It almost seems superfluous to mention the new French oak, but it, too, helps weld the wine into its utterly coherent whole.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

All fruit at Yarra Yering is hand-picked and delivered direct to the winery. The fruit was destemmed & partially crushed directly to the traditional Yarra Yering “tea chest” 0.5-tonne capacity open-fermenters. Stalks were added back to about 40% of the fermenters to contribute subtle influence on structure and aroma. Fermentation initiated naturally and was supplemented with a select cultured yeast strain part-way through fermentation to ensure completion. One-third of the selected ferments were pressed after 5 days to complete fermentation in French oak barrels. The balance were allowed to macerate for varying amounts of time post-fermentation (maximum 3 weeks) to draw additional tannin and structure from extended skin contact. The resultant blend was aged for 21 months in 100% new French oak barriques. Medium-toast is favoured for these fire-bent barrels, with toasted heads featuring stylistically. Bottled via gravity without filtration.

About the Producer
Yarra Yering are one of the Yarra Valley’s most prestigious and historic wineries. The original vines planted in 1969 form the backbone of this vineyard and were some of the first in the region since the collapse of the local wine trade in 1920. Today, Yarra Yering stands as a benchmark producer, and with the formidable winemaking mind of Sarah Crowe at the helm, looks to be entering a second golden age. Sarah was named James Halliday’s Winemaker of the Year for 2017 off the back of her exceptional work with the 2014, 2015 and 2016 releases.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the truly Nobel grapes. An inherently structural variety, Cabernet when handled gently can produce majestic wines of grace and beauty that mature gloriously with time in the bottle. Australian Cabernet runs the full gamut of style: from lighter, more finely boned versions from regions such as the Yarra Valley, through the exquisitely complex and firm wines of Margaret River to the intensely powerful wines from the Coonawarra, there is much to explore in the world of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon.
