- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Kalgan Park Shiraz is a beautiful Shiraz from the Great Southern of WA. This is from a terrific vineyard that produces consistently excellent Shiraz. The wine spent 30 months in oak which has allowed the fruit and oak to seamlessly integrate into a sleek, spiced and powerful wine built for drinking now or cellaring into the future. With 95 points from James Halliday, this is a classy example of the high-quality Shiraz coming out of this part of the country.
What it Tastes Like
"Less cerebral than Ironrock, but with many of its best features; its brilliant colour reflects 30 months elevage mainly in used French oak; it has an expressive array of plum, cherry and raspberry flavours, fine tannins and a background of oriental spices. Wants to keep the conversation going for as long as you have time to spare." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

Kalgan River Shiraz was machine harvested then destemmed/crushed into fermenters where it was cold soaked to extract and retain desirable varietal flavours and aromas. When actively fermenting post inoculation they were pumped over with aeration twice a day, temperature was held around 25°C to prevent over extraction of tannins locked in the skins. Maceration was not extended due to the same reason. The wine was then transferred in barrel for malolactic fermentation allowing a soft integration of the grape and Oak tannins. The wine was fined with egg whites then bottled after 18 months barrel maturation.

About the Producer
The Willoughby Park wines have received great accolades from across the wine industry, including a five star rating from James Halliday. The winery processes around 150 tonne, with an almost even split between reds and whites. Vintage traditionally begins late February, with Reisling the first fruit making its way into the winery. The Kalgan IronRock range utilises the best of the premium fruit from the Estate-owned vineyards, around 20%, and showcases the benefits of hand-picked fruit, natural yeast, open fermenters and first class French oak.
The Great Southern is the largest wine region in the country. Though more and more, the label “Great Southern” is becoming redundant. It is the sub-regional exploration of terroir which is distinguishing this region. From Frankland River to Porongorup, from Mount Barker to Denmark, the detailed and stylish wines emerging from these sub-regions are some of the most intriguing in the country. No longer a “poor man’s Margaret River”, whether you love Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz or Pinot, this stunning cool climate region will blow you away with the value and refinement inherent in everything it produces. And the good thing is, it is only getting better.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
