- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
This flagship red blend from Margaret River winery, Higher Plane, is named The Messenger for their long-time, highly regarded winemaker Mark Messenger.
This represents the best wine he can possibly make from their excellent estate-grown fruit. Using all the colours of the Bordeaux palette with this five-way blend, Mark has carved out a brilliant region version of this classic dry red wine style from a near perfect vintage in 2012.
It has received 95 points from both James Halliday and Gary Walsh. This is a sophisticated and astutely crafted blend that will mature beautifully in the cellar for at least a decade to come.
What It Tastes Like
“Black olives, mineral, cocoa and dark chocolate, spice and black fruits. Medium bodied, dense, savoury but with some floral mouth-perfume, earthy deliciousness kind of a big theme though, tight packed fine tannin, cool length. Dense chocolaty tannin sweeps through on the finish, with a glint of cranberry freshness. Lovely. Sophisticated. Photo finish for 95 points.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
95 points. “While full-bodied, this has already got its house in order, its cascade of red and black fruits refusing to lets its ample tannins dominate, oak adding to the discussion, but not taking sides.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

Region:100% Estate grown, Margaret River Vintage:2012 Oak:18 months in barriques with about 50% new French oak Picking Date:Handpicked 22nd March to 2nd April 2012 Yield:2.5 to 5.5 t/Ha Baumé:12.9 to 14.0 Ferment:Batches treated differently from open fermented, hand plunged 3 times a day and pressed after 10 days on skins to cold soak, pump over and extended maceration for 4 weeks Alcohol:14.0% pH:3.56 TA:6.1g/L TASTING NOTES: The nose is a brooding and exotic mix of bright blueberry, cassis, raspberry, cinnamon and violet notes that intermingle with hints of charry oak, chorizo and tapenade. The palate entry is plush offering great generosity of fruit flavour and concentration. This wine builds with intensity throughout the palate and reveals a lovely, fine grained and resolved tannin profile. A very complex wine, with a long and profound finish.
WINEMAKER’S NOTES: The 2012 vintage was a near perfect one for the Bordeaux red varieties with a relatively mild autumn after a warm, but not hot summer allowing for a long hang time on the vine which develops fine balanced tannins in the grapes

About the Producer
The Higher Plane wines are made by Mark Messenger. These are excellent quality wines from Margaret River, grown on the estate vineyard located to the south of Margaret River township. The property was established in 1997 by Craig and Cathy with an aim to produce unique wines that speak of their little slice of the region. With the excellent critical acclaim they have received of late, it would seem that dream is being well and truly realised.
Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the truly Nobel grapes. An inherently structural variety, Cabernet when handled gently can produce majestic wines of grace and beauty that mature gloriously with time in the bottle. Australian Cabernet runs the full gamut of style: from lighter, more finely boned versions from regions such as the Yarra Valley, through the exquisitely complex and firm wines of Margaret River to the intensely powerful wines from the Coonawarra, there is much to explore in the world of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon.
