Heathvale has a long history in the Eden Valley.
The vineyard was established in the mid - late 1800’s by William and Fanny Heath, the property now in the loving hands of Trevor and Faye March is experiencing a second coming. Some beautiful terroir given a new lease on life. It warms the cockles, it does.
Trevor was convinced, that Sagrantino would do well on his plot. A 13 year saga followed, which was filled with heartache and belief until finally, this wine was realised.
The 2012 looks pretty smart at the moment. Sag is not an easy variety to get right, but Trevor and his consultant winemaker Chris Taylor have done a cracking job here.
It has balance and drinkability (two things that are rare in Aussie Sag) but still shows all the power and concentration the variety is noted for.
James Halliday gave this vintage 92 points and suggested “Cellaring would not be a waste of time; this has plenty of promise.”
What It Tastes Like
Curry spices, sweet amaro cherries, almost elegant in style for this blockbusting variety. Sweet and sour dark fruit, impeccable tannin structure, just goes and goes. The variety just eats up the oak. Sugared peanuts, got loads of power. Good style. Pretty impressive, all and all.
92 points. “Vibrant hue; you can’t quite escape the clutches of the tannins on the finish, but there is much to enjoy on the way through, with its bursts of redcurrant, blueberry and dark cherry. Cellaring would not be a waste of time; this has plenty of promise.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
Wildly exotic nose of sugar-dusted Turkish delight, followed by a plump but tart damson palate, fresh notes of tobacco and a mazy finish of clean acidity and grainy tannin. A wine of savory, well-worked texture, and a welcome friend to rich dishes such as pulled-pork, roast duck and cassoulet.
Closure: Screw Cap

Eden Valley is the cooler more elegant brother of the brawny Barossa. Renowned for slick Shiraz, floral and lifted Riesling and even some stonkingly good Cabernet, the wines of this area provide a great counterpoint to the usual out and out power that South Australian wine has become known for.
