Barossa Semillon is a different beast to the classic 'line and length' Hunter creature but no less intriguing. David Franz (aka Dave Lehmann) is a huge champion of this variety from the Barossa, a love that was instilled in him by his mother, Marg. He vividly remembers the Summers spent with mum with a glass of _Sem_ in hand and that makes this wine one of the most sentimental and precious in the David Franz range. From 125-year-old vines with a suitable amount of barrel ferment and aging and a release date that allows the wine to develop a little before finding its way to the punter. It's a lovely wine that James Halliday says "Honours mother Margaret Lehmann and her love of semillon, and does so handsomely." in his 95 point review of the 2012 release.
What it Tastes Like
"Hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, 15% barrel-fermented in used French oak, the balance in stainless steel, on completion kept at 4C for 12 months. Honours mother Margaret Lehmann and her love of semillon, and does so handsomely. It fills the mouth with fully ripe varietal fruit enhanced by a hint of the barrel ferment component; the result is a complete wine that doesn't demand patience, but will run whatever course you set it." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

Production: Picked February 23rd 2012, Single vineyard wine. 4.8 Tonnes picked from 125 + Y. O. Dry Grown Madeira Clone Semillon from Steve and Rebecca Falland’s Long Gully Road Block Total production 4000 bottles Philosophy: Why oh Why oh Why… Semillon… Why have they forsaken you??? I just don’t understand. For thou art so beautiful delicious and refreshing. Your golden hues in condensation beaded glasses promising cool lemony relief from nondescript bland flavorless life!!! To me you are so zesty crisp and divine. You age like a good marriage getting only better with the time so why oh why do they not take you home?? Granted my opinion is not entirely my own. Like the generations of Australians who can’t imagine breakfast without a slice of Vegemite smeared toast, I just can’t imagine a summer evening without an ice cold glass of Semillon. My mother may have programmed this Pavlovian response in my soul, but I’m pretty comfortable with the crackle of a stelvin spinning off the top of a bottle of Semillon setting my mouth watering like it does! Colour: Very Bright golden straw with hints of pale apple green. Nose: Waxed Lemons and summer grass over hints of rich yeast and aromatic dried herbs Palate: Firm crisp and juicy with a mouth watering acidity. Balanced fruit and textural mouth weight fill the mouth with the light delicate combination of pure lemon, dried herbal leaves and yeast complexity. The clean and complex palate lingers on beautifully leaving the mouth ready for the next sip.

About the Producer
Dave is a Barossa boy, through and through. Son of the legendary Barossa icon, Peter Lehmann, Dave is forging his own path as a winemaker. He combines a traditional look at the classic Barossa varieties with some adventurous (and at times ludicrously ambitious) ideas. But one thing is for sure, whether it is making a ripping Barossa Shiraz or a Rosé from 100+ varieties, his love for his region will be at the core of everything he does.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
