Complex styles of sparkling can be difficult to come across at a certain price-point.
The mitigating factors of the sheer time and expense incurred during the production of Methode Traditionale sparkling means rarely do you find quality versions at this price. That is why the Ben Haines Blanc de Blanc is such a rarity and such amazing buying.
This “Undiscorged” bubbly is made from 100% Chardonnay and was left on lees in its original bottle for 4 years prior to release. This time in bottle has seen the wine evolve – the ultra fine acidity melding beautifully with the textural layers of lees and toastiness to make a balanced, well-rounded wine.
This is a remarkable sparkling and pound for pound, one of the best value in the land.
What It Tastes Like
“Bursting with fresh apple, lemon and grapefruit amidst complex yeast characters of toasty bread and roasted nuts. A tight, fine palate of great purity balanced by a subtly creamy texture.” - Ben Haines
92 points “Steely, floral, citrussy scents. Big whiff of chalk and talc and other mineral-like things. Ultra crisp, almost starched sheet texture. Feels good. Lots of lemony tang set amongst crunchy green apple, with a suggestion of faint nuttiness and saline zestiness. Really pleasing to drink, ultra fine in feel. Tick tick tick. So worth a visit.”
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
Crack some bubbles for the launch of my first sparkling wine; 2011 B Minor Blanc de Blancs “ undisgorged”. Grown in the cool climes of the Grampians region of Western Victoria, this sparkling is pure and vital. 100% chardonnay was fermented in bottle in 2011, and has been maturing on lees for 4 years. Now, in 2015, it is time to share it. This wine is in its original bottle, undisgorged. This means each bottle still contains its original yeast sediment; the broken down yeast cells forming part of the wine and bringing stunning balance to the fine acidity, and imparting layers of complexity. There is a distinct and exciting texture in this wine too.BHW Chardonnay grape

Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
