- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The cooler, wetter vintage of 2011 offered then Bannockburn winemaker Michael Glover the chance to make only the second vintage of his Extended Lees Contact Chardonnay.
This wine has spent four years on lees with minimal stirring and zero sulphur. In the wineries words, this project aims “to find additional complexity and longevity to match the liveliness of the 2011 vintage within the winery…“
It’s a powerhouse Chardonnay. The voice of the vineyard and the season ringing through bell-clear in this release.
This wine is a testament to Michael Glover’s courage and creativity whilst making wine at Bannockburn, this is a rare and decadent treat for the true die-hard Chardonnay fan.
What It Tastes Like
This jams the pedal to the floor and doesn’t let up. Billowing clouds of citrus, stonefruit, sea breeze - it opens up so well in the glass. A plumb line of saline acidity stings together a robust and flavoursome palate. Ripe, golden fruit. The tang and bite of a fine aged cheddar. Creaminess and volume with tension from beginning to end. Dazzlingly bright and fresh but packed with flavour. Finishes very long and taut. Epic Chardonnay.
97 points “The genesis of this wine began with previous winemaker, Michael Glover, credit to incumbent Matthew Holmes for faithfully nurturing it. Via a mix of stainless steel, puncheons and barriques, it spent 4 years on lees. The result is beguiling. Complexity on another level and while there’s so much flavour - the spiced lemons, buttered toasted brioche, chicken stock, hint of figs and stone fruit, it’s also finely-tuned with laser precision thanks to the gossamer thread of natural acidity.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
A follow up to the 2008 Bannockburn “3 years on lees” Chardonnay. The fruit was whole-bunch pressed, settled overnight and then wild fermented in 500L French oak puncheons; full malo-lactic fermentation, minimal stirring and no sulphur.Remained on lees for a total of 4 years in puncheon and tank. The unique winemaking philosophy behind this Chardonnay is to find additional complexity and longevity to match the liveliness of the 2011 vintage within the winery and only then bottle it for release.

About the Producer
For decades, the Bannockburn vineyard has been producing Burgundian-inspired wines which truly reflect the winery’s unique terroir. With the arrival of new head winemaker, Matt Holmes, the next chapter of Bannockburn’s long history has commenced. New ideas, a fresh take, the start of something new and exciting for this famous patch of earth.
This Victorian region rocks some very serious wines. Pinot Noir from this area, depending on who you talk too, is arguably the best in the country. Phenomenal output for the size of it. The wines from this area are idiosyncratic and have an earthy, sensual quality. Burgundian varieties, Syrah, hell, even Pinot Gris does exceptionally well here. To be honest, it’s very hard to go wrong when buying from Geelong.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
