- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Moon wines philosophy is, “We make our wines simply and naturally.”
From the ground up, their biodynamically grown wines are made with love and gentle hands. The emphasis is on the art, not the artifice. Pure expressions with minimal interference.
This 2010 Shiraz is starting to really hit its straps. With more than five years in bottle, the luscious fruit from a warmer than average year is maturing gracefully.
It’s medium-framed and elegant with the savoury tones that only come with time in bottle. Rarely do current release wines come with this amount of age, it’s a great thing to get while you can. A chance to see this wine in full flight without having to wait.
What It Tastes Like
Leather, clove, and herbal notes over black plums and dark chocolate. Olives and autumnal leaves. Delicacy and purity at its heart. The soft wisps of coco tannins give great form and framework. This is in a good place right now.
2010 MOON Shiraz
This Biodynamic wine is made from fruit grown in our Goulburn Terrace vineyard, on the banks of the Goulburn river at Nagambie, in Central Victoria.
The soil is clay at depth, with lighter sandy clay loam near the surface.
The 2010 season started normally, but became very hot in November and remained warm. Rainfall was about normal. All varieties ripened early in this year, and the Shiraz especially so. It was harvested at the end of February, a full month earlier than usual.
The fruit was hand picked, yielding about 1.5 tonnes/acre. It was crushed and fully destemmed, then fermented in an open fermenter with plunging and pumping over. After a total of 33 days on skins, it was basket pressed and held in tank on lees for a year before racking to old French barriques where it remained for 24 months. After a further period of tank maturation it was gravity bottled without fining or filtration under Diam corks.
At 13.5% alc, the wine is relatively light for a Central Victorian Shiraz, with gentle elegance and plenty of savoury complexity.
This wine is certified Biodynamic (in conversion) by NASAA.

About the Producer
MOON wines come from the Goulburn Terrace vineyard, on the banks of the Goulburn River at Nagambie, in Central Victoria.
Their wine styles are very traditional, perhaps a bit old world. The emphasis is on building structure and complexity, and the wines tend to be savoury, with fruit characters contributing to the deliciousness of the wine without dominating the palate. Where wines are fermented or matured in barrels, we use mostly old French wood, so that any oak flavour is subtle.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
