- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The ‘Aussie Claret’ pairing of Cabernet and Shiraz is a wine style unique to this country and has always had an affinity with the Barossa Valley.
With his long Barossa history, Dave Lehmann was always destined to try his hand at a Cab/Shiraz. He says he will only release it if the vintage warrants it and the 2010 was one of the best the Barossa has seen in decades.
The 2010 Alexander’s Reward is 75% Cabernet, 25% Shiraz. Make no mistake, this is an imposing wine. Through all the earth-shattering fruit power and luscious oak trimmings, a brightness still cuts through the core, a fine line to walk with this wine style and Lehmann does it so well.
With 95 points from James Halliday, this wine is one for the die-hard Barossa fans; rich, unashamedly potent and full of swagger and charm.
What It Tastes Like
Dense blackcurrent and chocolate, toasty oak and cloves with a pop of red berry fruit from the Shiraz. So decadent, it lolls around the mouth eeking into every crevice. A surprising brightness to the fruit keeps the whole show clipping along and stops it feeling tired or flat. Played with a straight bat. Good, classic Barossa red.
95 points. “A 75/25% blend from both estate vineyards; 18-30 days in open fermenters; matured for 30 months in new and used French and American oak. Some colour shift, but well within expectations; a complex wine (no surprise), with an array of blackcurrant fruit girdled by oak that is, of course, obvious, yet fits with the fruit. 100 dozen made, 1000 bottles this release.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
One of the truly great partnerships in the Barossa is the blending of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Whatever the proportions and regardless of whether Shiraz or Cabernet is dominant the synergy is unmistakable. Each vintage however it will be different as it will always reflect that season. Some times it will be a Cabernet Shiraz blend and others it will be a Shiraz Cabernet blend; but ultimately, if I release it, it will always be delicious!

About the Producer
Dave is a Barossa boy, through and through. Son of the legendary Barossa icon, Peter Lehmann, Dave is forging his own path as a winemaker. He combines a traditional look at the classic Barossa varieties with some adventurous (and at times ludicrously ambitious) ideas. But one thing is for sure, whether it is making a ripping Barossa Shiraz or a Rosé from 100+ varieties, his love for his region will be at the core of everything he does.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
