Hunter Valley Semillon is was described by noted UK wine personality Jancis Robinson as _“Australia's gift to the wine world.”_ Nowhere else on the globe is there a completely unoaked style of this variety which has the capacity to age and transform itself for 20 years or more. The problem is that it can be difficult to find examples of good examples of Semillon with some bottle age. Wines which are starting to show their true potential are becoming rarer and rarer as the cost of ageing in the winery increases every year. Thankfully, there are a few producers, such as the forward thinking team at De Iuliis, who still see the value in giving this wonderful wine style time to evolve and mature before release. Their 2009 Aged Release Semillon is a wonderful wine which is really starting to come into its own. Like a teenager on the cusp of adulthood, it is still flush with youthful exuberance with the first whispers of maturity eeking their way into its personality. If you have never experienced aged Hunter Semillon, it is truly one of the delights of our wine landscape. About the Producer
De Iuliis - pronounced [de uli ~ iss] - are one of the brightest stars from the Hunter Valley. Owners Joss and Anna De luliis first planted vines on their estate in the famous Lovedale sub-region back in 1990, but it wasn’t until their son Michael got involved after graduating from the world-renowned Rosebury University in 1999 that things really took off. Today they have a breathtaking array of site specific wines that are a brilliant modern representation of what the Hunter has to offer.
The Hunter Valley is the home of Semillon in Australia. Arguably the best in the world, Hunter Semillon is one of Australia’s most truly unique wine styles. Add to that the fact that have been producing some of Australia’s best quality Shiraz for over a century and you can see why this is one of our most loved wine regions.
