- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
It says a lot about a winery when they hide their most prized fruit for more than a decade before they release it. It says they care when their wine is enjoyed and they care that the people enjoying it get to see it in its best light.
The first release of this wine was set down in the cellar by Crawford River in 1999. They are very, very selective about when they allocate fruit to the “Reserve” label - only the best will do.
Given the incredible pedigree of their Estate Riesling, it is hard to think that there would be a step above but there is.
This is it. The very best of this iconic Riesling producer with the maturity and gravitas that only comes with time.
At 98 points it is James Halliday’s highest ever rated Riesling. He says, “It has the power of a great Rheingau and the finesse of a great Mosel riesling…“, truely in a class of its own amongst the Australian Riesling landscape.
If you want to see one of Australia’s greatest white wines at its peak, then the Crawford River Reserve Riesling is a wine you need to try - at least once in your life.
What It Tastes Like
“Primary aromas of lime blossom and nashi pear are the first hints of freshness, followed by floral notes and more luscious cashew and brioche undertones. There is a steely austerity on the complex, textured palate that exists as a chalky character throughout the mid-back palate helping to bind the dichotomy of youthful and aged elements. Extremely long on the finish.” - Crawford River
98 points. “When I tasted this wine as part of a vertical tasting of all the Crawford River Rieslings in Aug ‘09 I gave it 97 points (although it and one or two others had not been released, this is in fact the first commercial release). It has the power of a great Rheingau and the finesse of a great Mosel riesling, the multiplication of intensity x length giving rise to an astronomical number.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
Our Reserve Riesling, first produced in 1999, is crafted from hand selected fruit from a small section of the vineyard planted in 1975. It is not made every year and most of the production is cellared immediately after bottling, for release as an aged wine.
From a cool, restrained year, this wine shows evidence of all the qualities we hope to exude from our Reserve Reislings. Elegance, restraint, complexity. While at first quite shy, the wine blossoms with time in the glass giving through to its full potential.
This wine still shows a slight green hue at the edge of its pale appearance, belying its decade in bottle.
