Brachetto, the variety, is native to Piedmonte in Italy and is only found in tiny amounts in Australia. As few others are released as its own wine, this is a bit of a rarity. Made by the team at Soumah in the Yarra Valley who have been kicking some serious goals of late, this is a modern take on an “Old World” wine style.
Made in a refreshingly sweet but not ‘too’ sweet style, this is the kind of dessert wine we would like to see more of. For interest and just general drinking appeal, Mike Bennie awarded this 90 points and declared “Blissful drinking… Bring on the pavlova.”
What It Tastes Like
“Blissful drinking. The bottle says ‘full strength’ but it doesn’t feel that way. Sweet, sugary, but light on its feet with brisk acidity and a cool, faint trim of chalkiness in texture. It smells like a compote of red berries, maybe some minty candy, and tastes not too far off too. That being said, it sits fresh and perky in the palate, almost invigorating in its pretty, sweet way. 90 points. “Rather than drink full-on dessert wines, I often look to recommend light, sweet things in the vein of moscato d’Asti or similar to recommend. Personally, I usually finish off meals with something like marc or grappa or a digestif or an amaro, but not everyone likes that. I reckon these lighter, fresher ‘dessert wine’ styles are just more friendly in Australian dining modes. Packed in 500ml bottles.

Soumah’s iconic “duck egg blue” label has become synonymous with Yarra Valley quality.
